Japanese Taiko Drums J
JH takes his place among various sets of drums from Japanese temples.
He emerges in a powerful circle of concentric drums that evoke a meditative energy. At the beginning, with the drum skins quivering, the beats build and soon the taiko drumsticks start to fly around him, his movements becoming fluid. He strikes the same point, with infallible accuracy. He rotates and turns the drums, the cymbals vibrate and out of all this “tempest” is evoked a pleasing crescendo of rhythm. He extends a signal to his company and the students, who a second before were still, are suddenly possessed. Sometimes, while playing “in synch.”, they follow one another, carrying the beat in turns and without ever interrupting the flow.
At the end, his face wet, he finishes as he began, serene, allowing himself a small smile of satisfaction.
